Spotlight: NB Housing Partners

Did you know that in America on any given night there are approximately 643,067 people experiencing homelessness? 238,110 of those people are in families; 25% suffer from mental illness including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression; 17% are considered chronically homeless; 13% are fleeing domestic violence; and 12% are veterans. You may think that homelessness is only in larger cities but it touches smaller cities like New Braunfels more than you may realize.

In New Braunfels a non-profit organization called Connections offers a secure alternative to the “streets” for homeless, abused, or at-risk youth. Another successful example of helping the homeless is Green Doors in Austin, Texas. They are a non-profit organization that owns and manages 28 properties throughout Austin. They are serving more than 300 residents annually, which includes managing 50 rental assistance vouchers for low income households in Travis, Williamson and Burnet Counties. Through these opportunities Green Doors is able to serve a variety of people struggling with poverty and homelessness, including veterans, persons with disabilities, and single parent families.

In February 2013 a group of locals formed NB Housing Partners: a non-profit set out to build the first transitional living shelter for the homeless right here in New Braunfels. The organization hopes to provide short term housing solutions to both individuals and families who may be facing a housing crisis. Key directors of this organization include Kellie Stallings from the before mentioned Connections Individual and Family Services and seasoned real estate professional Bryan Kastleman. If you are interested in assisting in the efforts of the NB Housing Partners or know someone needing transitional housing please e-mail bkastle@kastleman.com.
